As a very outspoken political group, do you ever feel burnout? How do you deal with the hard emotions of being politically aware? We started out, and punk rock and politics were very synonymous.

It was something that was very close to my heart as the lyricist. If you would accuse us of anything back then, it was preaching to the converted. Now the world has changed, and our fans are far less homogeneous politically than when we started, and the things I say can be far more divisive. Navigating this band politically in such a divisive era is a little trickier, but it is also more important than ever.

We have a direct connection to our fan base, whatever size it is, and I want to be part of the solution and not the problem. I feel a responsibility to steer our fans in the right direction—at the very least, not steer them in the wrong direction. We have had songs be misinterpreted, or someone I disagree with saying a song is about something else entirely.

All I can give you is our songs, and if it connects with you, odds are we have something in common, but I am also competing with every single major media whatever. So, all I can really do is take it one day at a time, talk about who we are, and hope that resonates with somebody. It was also a moment when we realized we have already made so many records that we're proud of and we've already created the sound that we like, that we felt we kind of had a little more permission to have free reign to do what we want to do here. There is still a lot of traditional Rise Against, but there are also some new sounds that people might be surprised by.

But yes, 10 records is definitely a moment to reflect on. That's for sure. Tim: This time we did something different. We made it in LA. We're mixing it right now. We've actually been playing one of the new songs on this tour. PRT: I wanted to ask about that.

How do you come up with the perfect set list for a festival? Tim: It's hard. We take a little bit of a different approach for a festival than say our own club show. We know that we have our fans here. But then you also have a lot of casual listeners who might not know who you are, and they're just kind of here to have a good time. And we try to give them the songs that they might recognize.

Try to give them something that will entertain them, but which also may bring them to a show the next time we play Belgium. PRT: But then also smuggl e in a new one that no one has heard yet. PRT: You've been a political punk band for over 20 years now. Does it ever feel discouraging, especially in today's climate? Tim: Yeah, it can be for sure.

It's discouraging when you see elements of growing right wing or conspiracy theory kind of troll culture enter the punk scene. You ask yourself where we went wrong. If this type of ideology is finding its way into our ranks, where did we let up? But it just means you have to try a little harder and communicate more. You can't take for granted that everybody is on the same team.

You may feel discouraged talking about things that seem obvious until you see somebody go astray. Then you realize you should have said these obvious things more, not less. PRT: I was watching a video on YouTube from your show at Hurricane Fest two years ago, and it starts with the introwhich are these news reports about refugees. So what would you say the purpose of Rise Against in is?

Have you exceeded all expectations now or are there still things you want the band to do? This band started just being a band and going to play some shows, and it was playing VFW halls and church basements, so to be where it is now has completely exceeded our expectations. Of any punk band. No punk band started to be where this band is now.

So I think the point of continuing making records is just because we love to do this.
