Together, they shattered society's expectations for what deaf, blind people can achieve.

They remain, today, the preeminent example for deafblind learning and teaching. Sullivana valedictorian at Perkins, was dispatched to Helen's Alabama home by the school's director, Michael Anagnos. After patiently gaining Helen's trust, Sullivan began Helen's education using techniques practiced decades earlier by Samuel Gridley Howe, the first director of the Boston-area school.

Howe had famously taught English to a young deafblind girl, Laura Bridgmanby labeling objects with raised letters, finally jumbling these letters and having Bridgman rearrange them to spell the object's name. Similarly, Sullivan " fingerspelled " into Helen's hand the name of separate objects. It wasn't until, famously, the teacher spelled "w-a-t-e-r" into Helen's hand, while running water over her hand that the connection between letters and words and objects was made, and the idea of language was revealed.

It was just weeks after Sullivan had arrived in Alabama.

In addition to her friend Martha, Helen's dog Bellean old setter, was also a constant companion to her. She enjoyed Belle's presence because of the dog's excitement as well as her calm nature. Helen was the first child to Arthur and Kate Keller. Her father, Arthur Kellerwas not only a distant cousin to Robert E. Lee, but he served in the Confederate Army.

After the war, he was an editor for the North Alabamian. Before meeting Helen's mother, he was married to Sarah E. Rosser, who had passed away. He later married Kate in A strong, loving man with an affinity for hunting and fishing, Arthur searched far and wide to help find Helen treatment during her younger years. Both Simpson and James Keller were Arthur's children from his first marriage.

James was a teen as Helen was growing up, and it is noted that he attempted to control her prior to Anne's arrival. It is also documented in Anne's letters that he is the only one who tried to curb Helen's willfulness as a child. While Helen unintentionally terrorized her parents and siblingsJames tried to stand his ground to get her to behave.

Helen also had a younger brother, Phillips, whom she helped name. While Helen didn't mention her brothers much in her writings, she did discuss walking hand-in-hand with her sister and attempting to talk to her with her primitive language. Once Helen learned to speak, Mildred became a close confidant. InHelen's mother contacted Alexander Graham Bell, who was working on a hearing device for the deaf.

With a visual impairment, Anne was a star student at Perkins Institute before she came to the Keller household in Alabama to teach Helen. She was able to develop an interpersonal connection with Helen.
