In the shadow of the cathedral of Cuernavaca, one hour south of Mexico City, hidden in a deep oak armoire, hangs the pearl-encrusted robe of Prince Felix Yusupov, the man who killed Rasputin. Dating back to pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg, the robe was sewn for the prince to sit for portraits, but its sable trim was all but worn off at Parisian soirees in the early s by his protege, Victor Contreras, who now preserves the robe along with photographs and personal papers documenting Rasputin's murder.

One of Mexico's best-known sculptors, Contreras is sprightly despite his 65 years, and boasts that he was even more handsome and talented in his youth. Despite his mother's eccentricities, Yusupov received an excellent education. He graduated from a prestigious private gymnasium and later attended the University of Oxford, where he founded the Russian Society.

Throughout his life, he remained a passionate patriot of Russia.

InYusupov played a pivotal role in the assassination of Grigori Rasputin, a controversial monk who had gained undue influence over Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra. When Rasputin declined to leave Saint Petersburg, Yusupov shot him dead. The assassination sparked controversy and outrage, and Yusupov faced charges of murder. However, the investigation was halted due to the involvement of Grand Duke Dmitri, a relative of the Tsar.

Yusupov was placed under house arrest, but the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in allowed him to flee to France. Yusupov spent the rest of his life in exile, living in Malta, London, and Paris.
