So then I took care of her house, did all the cleaning, washing and cooking for the family. How did you plan on taking care of your baby? My mother and sister supported us for a while, so I was taken care of in my early stages. I found a baby sitter, and I did all right. I was planning on going to school to be a practical nurse, because the club thing was still a bit shaky.

Then Ike lost his singer and asked me if I would sing. When was the turning point, professionally speaking? Ike recorded a demo, and I sang on it. I was twenty, and my kid was about two. When did your sexual relationship with Ike begin? He had broken up with the mother of his two sons, who I ended up raising. He was without a girlfriend.

One of the musicians said he was going to come to my room and have sex with me. He was a man, he did serious things, like going to clubs and talking business. I was still used to going to movies and playing basketball. I had a kid, but I was still hanging out with high-school friends. Who was the Ike Turner whom you knew? Ike was the son of a preacher and a seamstress.

He had a complex about how he spoke. A lot of his fight came because he was embarrassed about his manners and not being educated. So Ike had a built-in anger. And the drugs just magnified that. I was trapped into really caring about Ike. If I left him, what was he going to do? Go back to St. As horrible as he treated me, I still felt responsible for letting him down. That was a mental problem I had at the time. And I was afraid to leave. I knew I had no place to hide, because he knew where my people were. My sister was living in an apartment basically rented by Ike.

I felt sorry for him. Having been left by both of your parents, you were a person who really understood the pain abandonment could bring. Yes, and at first, I was in love with him. I was afraid, but I cared about him. I cared about destroying his career. And as long as I was unattached, as unattached to him as I had been to my own family, then I was just there.

Still, Tina, this was a man who beat and humiliated you repeatedly. You could almost say I felt like I was given a mission, trying not to depend on him. I remember not wanting him to have to need me. I just felt so responsible for that person. When I finally did leave him, it all made sense. There were many terrible things that Ike did to you, but none more incomprehensible than beating you and then making you have sex with him afterward.

The movie has a scene with Ike and Tina where Ike discusses others who left him after he discovered them. He knew that Tina was a great talent and it was clear that he used sex, violence and money to control her to insure that she would not leave him - broke and not getting the credit! Ike had to make sure that his great talent stayed with him, because he knew that once exposed to Hollywood - richer guys would pull her away from him, much like Dorothy Stratten was from Snyder.

It's the good thing that it happened for her, as I really dislike cover acts. I like original songs. However, discovered that she had a few obscure covers on her big comeback album. That's fine, since they were obscure. Tina seems like a really nice woman and she was one of the older women who always stood the test of time in being attractive.

Time catches up to all of us, but she STILL has the high energy level that helps her to endure her recent health issues. Any person with lower energy level would not have been able to endure. The point is that Tina is telling us not to dwell on negative things and find whatever spiritually enlightens you.

Wonderfully written true story of Tina Turner's life! I am a new fan of Tina Turner, i only started listening to her music recently. I was born in the late 90s, when i saw her music videos on the television, i only saw Tina Turner as a big haired woman with a "manly" voice back when i was a kid. Now a year ago, after searching "Proud Mary" on Youtube, i came across a video of another Tina Turner, one with long hair, wearing a purple mini dress and singing as a duet with a man called Ike.

I was so hooked up on that performance, i looked at more of her performances as "Ike and Tina Turner. Ike is no doubt a talented musician, he really kicks some ass on that guitar, but then Tina is like a "hurricane" on stage along with the Ikettes. It was only i started to read the comments underneath the videos that people were bad mouthing Ike Turner, calling him a "coward" etc.

It was after i watched the VH1 documentary on Tina Turner, that i found out that Ike was abusing her all these years. I could not believe it, i mean when i watched them performing on stage together, i would not think that there was something going on behind the scenes. Now i have just finished reading the whole book "I, Tina". I must say that, if you saw the movie, you need to read this book, as the movie only tells a small proportion of what went on behind the scenes.

Although i could not believe what i was reading, this book is also inspiring At the beginning of the book it tells about her childhood, back when she was Anna Mae Bullock from a small town called Nutbush, Tennessee. She mentioned about her parents relationship which was also quite a rocky one, and also that she was a loner when growing up, so she was more independent and went out to find her own happiness.

Tina says childhood experience helped her through her time with Ike Turner, and found her happiness in chanting.

She also has taught me some valuable things in the book, but four things i learnt that stuck with me; 1 That there is a "God" inside all of us. We just need to find it. Because you will find that when you're free, your true creativity, your true self comes out. During her time with Ike, a reader told her "You will be among the biggest of stars, and the person with you will fall away like a leaf from a tree" I could not respect and admire her enough for being so patient, and i am so happy that she did become one of the biggest stars on the planet, and still is.
