Archived from the original on November 10, Rodrigo y Gabriela was produced by John Leckie, renowned for his work with alternative rock acts including Radiohead, Muse, and Stone Roses. Gabriela: We often just sit together in a room and jam independently. If Rodrigo likes what he hears me playing, he might start adding a new melody to it.

We just fall into a zone where we get really focused. Sometimes this also happens at soundcheck or at the hotel before the gig. We try to fit in writing whenever we can, even if the circumstances are crazy. We prefer ideas that are a lot of fun, diverse, and dynamic.

It takes us anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months to come up with something. During that time, we are constantly changing the structure. So, in a way, live performance is part of the composition process. We typically just record riffs and ideas onto our Mac laptop using its built-in sound recording software and condenser mic. The sound quality may be terrible, but it ensures we remember any ideas that might otherwise disappear.

When we get serious about writing, we use Pro Tools 6. How does composing for two acoustic guitars differ from writing for your previous metal band? Gabriela: In the metal band, we were much younger and would fight for every little element in a piece. We just run with it and try to finish the thing. You always learn something new. Another difference with the metal band is that we tried to make everything as complicated as possible.

Rodrigo: I think to effectively adapt a song like that, you have to know the song perfectly. If you want to create a new version that comes from the heart, you need to really love the song and align yourself with the vibe of the original. I listened to Master of Puppets, the album that track is from, every day for years and still listen to it a lot.

So, I wanted to be very faithful to the original and simply arrange it for two guitars while trying to somehow reproduce all of the band elements, including the drum parts. All the latest guitar news, interviews, lessons, reviews, deals and more, direct to your inbox!

The longstanding connection that has made Rodrigo y Gabriela one of the most captivating guitar partnerships of their generation has always been equally to do with their solid intuition for knowing how best to interact musically, and something intrinsically deeper than that. Consequently, their desire to explore spontaneous composition came not from wanting to jam or noodle in the sense that many guitarists understand improvisation, but from wanting to allow a heightened sense of spiritual awareness — inspired by the slightly slippery philosophical concept of nondualism — to seep into their creative process and flow back out in song form.

It kind of shifted my perception of reality. In fact, when Rodrigo y Gabriela first started experimenting, they had no expectation that a release would ensue.

As well as diverging into electric tones, the album also features the subtle use of analogue synths, Mellotron and even the entire Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra to further accentuate its dynamic drama with strings and percussion. While these new elements might seem like a wild leap from the twin nylon string sound we know and love, Rodrigo is quick to remind us that the fundamentals of their craft remain unchanged.

The songs are actually songs. The melodies and the structures are very clear. While revered for his intricate lead work, Rodrigo also refrained from using the electric landscape as an excuse for gratuitously flexing his speed chops, revealing that — actually — that was never his style, even as a young metalhead. I felt like I could play faster here.

Even on acoustic, my time of playing fast is gone.
