Inhe again toured Europe, this time as captain-coach of the Kangaroos. His career ended prematurely when he broke his leg during the first test at Leeds. He returned to the field in France, but in a minor game suffered a further break of the leg. After retiring from the playing field, Reg became involved in the media side of rugby league, becoming a sports writer and broadcaster, and providing excellent analysis.

He was also named as one of the centres, along with Mal Meninga, in Australian rugby league's seventeen-player Team of the Century in April [10] He was made a life member of the Sydney Cricket Ground, and a plaque in the Walk of Honour there commemorates his career; ina bronze statue of Reg was unveiled as the seventh at the grounds as part of the Basil Sellers Sports Sculpture project.

A drunken phone call during a NSW bonding session that led to his sacking on the eve of his Origin debut, the curse of injury and the ultimate decision to walk away from the game and play rugby union for Paris glamour club Stade Francais only add to his complex journey.
