Living in Cumbria, his paintings are still sold around the world, with his distinctive water-colour style marking him out as one of the foremost illustrators of his age. It transpired that a German soldier had found the diaries in the bombed out field hospital, taken them to Talbot House in Belgium, where soldiers went for rest and recooperation, and handed them in to British officers.
